Bridge City will paddle 72 miles in 12 hours

On Saturday, August 12, 2017, Bridge City Paddling Club will paddle a dragon boat from downtown Portland around Ross Island from 8 AM to 8 PM.  The endurance paddle event is a fund raiser for the Children’s Cancer Association and all proceeds go to CCA.

Each lap around Ross Island is approximately six miles and the club typically makes about twelve laps in the twelve hours for a total distance of about seventy miles.  The club will be joined by other dragon boat teams who will take one or more laps with the club.

Paddle a dragon boat for twelve hours

A dragon boat is a long and narrow canoe-style human powered boat with twenty paddlers, a caller, and a steersperson.  The sport originated in China over 2,000 years ago.

To help Children’s Cancer Association

Children’s Cancer Association is a non-profit that provides free, innovative programs and services for seriously ill children, teens, and their families.  Founded by a family after their daughter, Alexandra, died of cancer at the age of five, CCA provides joy to families who need far more than just medicine.

In the eigthth annual Dawn to Dusk Paddle

Bridge City Paddling Club created the Dawn to Dusk Paddle in 2010 to help raise money for other non-profit organizations.  The club has a two part mission – to compete in the sports of dragon boating and outrigger canoe racing on a national and international basis and to have a strong community outreach program using our strong backs and competitive team spirit to make the world and our local community a better place.  The club has raised over $275,000 over the past six years for Children’s Cancer Association, Special Olympics of Oregon, and Blue Planet Network.

We paddle, you donate!

This is an endurance paddle by Bridge City athletes who train year round, so we need your encouragement and financial help but we won’t ask you to paddle with us.  We will have several Portland dragon boat teams join us for a lap as part of their weekend practice schedule.  We will also have corporate groups joining us for team building and community service event during the day – if you have a group of fifteen people interested in joining us as group, please contact us.
